Michigan's Uniform Public Expression Protection Act (UPEPA) took effect on March 24, 2026, making Michigan one of more than 30 states with anti-SLAPP protections. The law is designed to protect individuals and organizations from Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs), which are lawsuits often intended to silence, intimidate, or financially burden people for exercising their free speech, petitioning, press, or association rights.
