As the end of the year approaches, the increase in online activities creates a ripe opportunity for hackers to gain access to your computers, networks and personal information.

One method used by hackers to infiltrate a computer or network is to send out emails that appear to have originated from a familiar source. One way to identify potentially troublesome emails is to observe whether the sender has a foreign domain extension.

Because .com and .net are common domestic domain extensions, it is easy for a recipient to miss that the source of an email with the domain extension .cm originated in Cameroon or an email with the domain extension .ne originated in Niger.

It is important to read carefully both the name of the sender and the domain extension before opening any email. If the sender’s name is suspicious or includes a foreign domain name, you should treat it as potentially malicious.
